MAUS - Mannheim Support System for Schools

MAUS - Mannheim Support System for Schools

MAUS is the abbreviation for „Mannheimer Unterstützungssystem Schule“ which means „Mannheim Support System for Schools“

For the reference project from 2008 to 2010 Mannheim provides all eight participating schools (3 primary schools, 3 secondary modern schools, 1 secondary school, 1 grammar school) with a total of 10,000 additional remedial lessons, equivalent to EUR 250,000.

Selected pupils are getting tailor-made support at the schools, even on weekends and in the holidays, if required: German, Maths and English are taught but there are also theatre workshops or assertiveness training courses.
The support activities, which are free of charge, are offered by the evening academy, the city library and the music school of Mannheim. It is decisive for the city of Mannheim that this kind of municipal support measurably increases the educational success of the individual pupil. The attention is focussed on better transitions from primary school to the different secondary school tracks, reduced number of class repetitions and a successful school career.

The project is a role model – not only in Mannheim. Other German towns and cities are also interested in the experiences of the City of Squares. The project is guided by scientists of the Chair for Empirical Educational Research of the University of Würzburg, Prof. Dr. Heinz Reinders.
The empirical values known so far and the results of the evaluation shall be integrated into a continuation of the Mannheim Support System for Schools which is supposed to include other schools and other municipal educational offerings from the areas of youth work and
