Truth and Angst in the Information Society (Wahrheit und Angst in der Informationsgesellschaft)

Vortrag in englischer Sprache

According to the traditional view true statements relate to reality, independent of our beliefs. This understanding raises perplexities, for instance are moral truths "out there" independent of what anyone thinks? We trust we know some truths and since many of our beliefs rely on trust, such as trusting doctors, exploring the connection between belief and trust is crucial.

Social media appears to reshape our understanding of justification and trust, prompting questions about whom to trust, what to trust, and how to trust when forming beliefs. Examining how some features of social media contribute to doubt and anxiety regarding truth, the lecturer contends that doubt and anxiety are not solely products of the online environment but of the inherent perplexities of language and especially of the distrust and social Angst we bring to the keyboard.
