What is a Urban Thinkers Campus

The Urban Thinkers Campus is an initiative of UN-Habitat’s World Urban Campaign, conceived as an open space for critical exchange between urban actors, who see urbanization as an opportunity that can lead to positive urban transformations. These events have a look on current and future challenges of urban life and develop answers and solutions that are adoptable for cities all over the world.

The Urban Thinkers Campus is promoted by the United Nations, with the aim of sensitizing and creating awareness among the citizens on urban issues – and to contribute for the New Urban Agenda, the main outcome document of the Habitat III conference, that has happend in Quito/Ecuador in 2016.
The Urban Thinkers Campus aims to investigate different ideas and solutions, offering an integrated approach and giving voice to the various stakeholders on the global as well as on the local platform. Civil society, public administrations, companies, experts and researchers, youg and old, will meet in order to identify and overcome obstacles towards smart and sustainable urban development.

From 20 to 22 October 2017, on behalf of the World Urban Campaign (WUC) of UN Habitat, the City of Mannheim will be organizing an Urban Thinkers Campus for the second time after 2016. Under the event title “Mannheim 2030 – Reimaging The City – Reimaging The Future” Mannheim would like to have discussions about the implementation of the global 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) with global and local experts as well as with the citizens of Mannheim. Mannheim is combining the further implementation of Agenda 2030 and the SDG with the development of a municipal model and for this reason has started the participatory process: “Mannheim 2030”.

The aim of this model is to describe how the SDG are to be developed at a municipal level by the year 2030. As a central module in the development of this model, Mannheim will be holding this Urban Thinkers Campus. The result of the conference will be the basis for the further development of the model, which aims to formulate a model for “Mannheim 2030” by the end of 2018.
