Mannheim’s visual artists have a decisive influence on the cultural life of the city and just as the cultural life is formed and developed by and with them, the city supports local artists through a promotional programme which is oriented towards transparent quality criteria

The fact that the Mannheim Castle owned one of the earliest and most important collections of European paintings under Karl-Theodor until the French Revolutionary Wars, is hardly known and unfortunately history.

Based on contemporary aspects, the committed collection and exhibition policy of the “Kunsthalle“ has successfully continued along the same lines since the beginning of the 20th century. The Reiss-Engelhorn-Museums count among the outstanding cultural-historical institutions in Germany and particularly distinguish themselves in the area of archaeology, world cultures and photography. The eminent technological and economic importance of the city is also reflected by the Technoseum which entirely focuses on technological and social history. In addition, the city offers art lovers and artists diverse stages by a considerable number of internationally operating galleries, the Art Association and the performance specialists of “Zeitraum-Exit“.

However, art is not only history but, above all, lively confrontation with the world. The Mannheim University of Applied Sciences trains students in the area of applied art and the Free Academy of Fine Arts makes a significant contribution to the artistic education as a non-municipal institution.
