 The Old Fire Station

The Old Fire Station

The building housing the main fire station was constructed in 1911/12 according to the plans of the city's buildings councillor R. Perrey in a neo-Baroque style on the Alte Messplatz. The ground floor between the two wings housed the fire brigade's vehicles and equipment, the upper floors the crew's quarters. The wings have three floors and are decorated with ornate Baroque gables. The octagonal tower dominates the south wing towards the Neckar. The central fire station came into service in June 1912 and was used by the professional fire brigade of the city until 1975. The roof of the tower, however, was damaged during World War II.

As part of its building development scheme for the north bank of the Neckar, the municipal planning office declared the building to be not worthy of preserving. A citizen's action group was however able to save the listed building and in 1979/80 it was fully restored and turned into a cultural and media centre. In the garages, which formerly housed the fire engines on the ground floor, there is now a music studio; the top floor of the tower is home to the youth theatre group "Schnawwl". The floors between house a workshop for artists and the office for cultural activities. The tower formerly used by the fire brigade for drying their fire hoses now contains studios for artists
