Evening School

When, shortly before the turn of the century in 1899, the adult education centre in Mannheim was founded by representatives of different cultural societies, nobody suspected which progressive spirit would once be assumed to have motivated this action; and nobody suspected the near absolute dependency of our community on the desire of its citizens for further education within the space of little more than two generations. One can only understand the meteoric development of the adult education centre in the twenties and up to 1933 if one takes into consideration that there always have been men and women who took considerable responsibility for and invested their whole lives in the growth of the institution.

When Prof. Langer took over responsibility for municipal cultural activities in 1945, whereupon the "Evening School" was founded in 1946, she exclusively concentrated on the vocational training and further education of soldiers returning from the war. The development under Dr. Günther Schulz, who became director after Prof. Langer's death, is mainly characterised by the expansion of the area of adult education. When he took over the adult education centre in Bremen in 1958, he left behind a viable, functioning, well-organised educational institution. Dr. Richard Erny was appointed his successor. Thanks to him, the number of staff in the adult education centre and the public's awareness of its status increased considerably. The focus on the individual remains despite the rapid growth of the institution.

The head office of the adult education centre and the evening school is in R 3, 13; another location is to be found on the podium floor of the Stadthaus or council building. The courses offered in the Stadthaus include philosophy, religion, cultural history, literature, art, psychology and rhetoric. On top of this there is the lecture programme of the "Kulturmagazin", courses by the music department, regular exhibitions as well as other events according to demand.
