Jury Awards Three Identical Prizes for the New “Kunsthalle”

The future of “Kunsthalle Mannheim” is about to begin! Today, the 15-member panel of judges chaired by Prof. Jörg Friedrich (Hamburg) has awarded three 50 000 Euro prizes in its international competition for the construction of new premises for the “Kunsthalle Mannheim”. It acknowledged five further designs with 12 000 Euro rewards.

Bilfinger Berger Moves Headquarters to Glückstein District

Bilfinger Berger is to move its headquarters from Carl-Reiß-Platz to the Glückstein District. The international engineering and services company will purchase 4 400 square meters of land on the future Lindenhofplatz, giving it direct access to Mannheim’s main train station. Direct accessibility to main-line trains, together with the modern environment and the prestigious showcase location were all advantages which swayed Bilfinger Berger’s choice in favor of the location.

From May 18 to 25, 2013, Mannheim will be a hive of activity. The international German Gymnastic Festival IDT („Internationales Deutsches Turnfest“) will attract a mass of sport enthusiasts throughout the local Rhine Neckar region. Mayor for Education and Sport Dr. Ulrike Freundlieb held discussions with both IDT organisation committee’s director Heinrich Clausen and Daniel Sautter, director of the Regional Sport Association, on this major event and its importance for Mannheim.

„We want to learn from the best“, said Lord Mayor Dr. Peter Kurz as he welcomed to Mannheim Ibone Bengoetxea, Mayor from Bilbao, and Leandro Ardanza Marqués, Bilbao’s strategic advisor. In 2011, Bilbao won the European Public Sector Award (EPSA) when Mannheim came second with its administrative restructuring program Change². Both cities have now come together to exchange know-how.

Mannheim is creating an ever wider international network. Contacts in Spain are currently being intensified. Lord Mayor Dr. Peter Kurz used a private visit to Barcelona as an opportunity to meet its Mayor for Culture, Innovation and Creativity, Jaume Ciurana i Llevadot and Carles Sala i Marzal, head of its cultural office (Barcelona Capital – Institut de Cultura).

“Shared ambition is critical” is the title of Swansea’s Community Strategy 2010-2014. Mannheim’s twin town has been working with strategic goals since 2004. Lord Mayor Dr. Peter Kurz and First Mayor Christian Specht took a delegation over to Swansea for a closer look.
